Peziza proteana var. sparassoides (Boud.) Korf syn. Gyromitra phillipsii Massee. Krauser Becherling, Bonfire Cauliflower. Fruit body 3–12cm across and up to 25cm high, extremely convoluted and brittle, sessile, the inner, spore-bearing surface smooth and whitish with ochraceous tints, the outer flushed pinkish and scurfy. Asci 300 x 11µ, blued at the tip by iodine. Spores containing two oil drops, minutely warted, 10–13 x 6–7µ. Habitat on fire sites. Season autumn. Rare. Said to be edible. Distribution, America and Europe. |
